The goal of the Best Start Maternity Care Program is to improve pregnancy outcomes with decreased infant morbidity and mortality rates. This is accomplished by providing improved access to early prenatal care and implementing a system of coordinated care. It provides case management for Medicaid eligible maternity clients residing in Health Group of Alabama's Maternity Care District 2. This district includes Madison, Jackson, Marshall, Morgan, Lauderdale and Limestone counties.
Professional case managers conduct an in-depth psychosocial assessment and coordinate services for patients including physician appointments, childbirth classes and the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. Assistance with transportation is arranged when needed and other resource referrals are made when applicable. Best Start postpartum patients receive a follow-up phone call to discuss postpartum physician appointments, contraceptive information and further counseling as necessary.
